La Pelubrería

PROJECT

For more than thirty years, the legendary Paco Martín hairdresser’s/beauty salon in Chueca has served a neighbourhood which is a confluence of diverse people with a connection to culture, art and all manner of activities.

Owner and founder Paco Martín, whose interests range from poetry and contemporary art to music and philosophy, has created a space where conviviality and curiosity are the order of the day. While having their hair done, clients can listen to music, read gossip magazines, or consult the library of novels and poetry (they can purchase items too). From 2015, under the name La Pelubrería (a mix of the Spanish words for hairdresser’s (peluquería) and library (librería)), Paco started hosting other activities in his salon such as art exhibitions and poetry readings.

In 2017, Paco Martín decided to set up a cultural association under the same name and to professionalise the cultural entity La Pelubrería with a team of volunteers.

PROPOSAL

Working in collaboration with the team put together by Paco, Cara de Pan is in charge of conceptualising and executing the project and for professionalising the programming, communication and operations, both internally (the team, and the responsibilities for each activity) and externally (frequency of activities, on-off production and publicity, including website conceptualisation and newsletters).

From November 2017 and throughout 2018, we created four types of cultural activities: visual and contemporary art, poetry, music and dance. These cultural experiences would all have a place in La Pelubrería once every two months.

Cara de Pan secured the involvement of artists including Txus García, Ben Clark and Concha Vidal de Valicourt and positioned La Pelubrería as a quality cultural agent that has since attracted emerging and celebrated artists alike in the aforementioned disciplines.

La Pelubrería continued its work from 2019 and now, without the participation of Cara de Pan, provides the Chueca neighbourhood with quality experiences suitable for all audiences.

La Pelubrería is part of the network of Cara de Pan collaborators, as for some time now it has specialised in producing public and urban art on the streets of Madrid.
